It’s ‘15 goin’ on ‘84
by Priscilla Galstaun-Khader
It’s a new year but don’tcha know
Nothin’s changed here
Life’s still the same for the blacks, reds and browns and the truthers, yo
Downside up, right is wrong
It’s ‘15 goin’ on ‘84 for a while now
Shake off the sleep, look in deep
There’s no escape, nor relief
For the weary who need it most, we’re toast
You stylin’? Doin’ the midnight jivin’?
Waitin’ for the ball to drop, to stop
That free fallin’ oh snap!
It’s all an illusion, a fiction to keep you believin’,
Not just some colors in a crayon box for them suited cops
To play around and amuse themselves like we’re the pox
But real people with hearts and minds to win or lose
Depends on what they choose
Orders from their tops or their conscience buried six feet deep in a box
All the bright lights around you ain’t big enough for the darkness inside you
Believin’ the Big Gs’ the hero and you’re the co-star,
And it’s got rights to controlin’ the lives of the terminally ill and sufferin’
Snuffin’ out lives with wars on grown ups and babies
Cos’ thats just a bold faced lie though
That the THCs and the CBDs are a gateway drug for ya
Since all them studies disprove it, see it’s you
Who ain’t payin’ attention to all the contrary interjection
Just standin’ there noddin’ while kids get juvie and innocent folks the slammer, cos’ You’re approvin’ and bangin’ down the gavel on legislation for more incarceration
It’s a new year but don’tcha know
Nothin’s changed here
Life’s still the same for the blacks, reds and browns and the truthers, yo
When you’re out celebratin’ and that ticker tape goes flyin’
Past your face in a race to keep the pace
With the bullet that missed it’s mark, not, and ended forever an embrace of life
Then give way to the thought of a son, father, mother or daughter
Who lost but overcame, not, the future that they had, now gone, for what?
See those fireworks bro?
Ain’t nothing like them only worse though
Are the bombs that continue to drop on the heads of brown folks, yo
Time to stop supportin’ the statists who vote for more cos’
The State ain’t your daddy, it’s your john
And you’re it’s tool, don’t be a fool cos’ it ain’t cool, see
The dead speak for themselves, loud and clear, it’s you
Who ain’t payin’ attention to the rule they’ve got you nailed to.
So where’s the real party at, girl? Cos’ all the confetti blowin’ around the place ain’t
Comin’ close to the bars stuck in a whistle-blowers face
What’s up boy? Don’t you know? Goin’ against the grain, usin’ your brain
Speakin’ truth to power gets you locked up, never to feel the rain again, only pain
And I want my phone back for realz, sneaky G.
Along with my computer and other paraphernalia you took
When you sent the popo like you’re some big St.Bernard
Pretendin’ to have my back only to keep me trackin’ while you’re packin’
My rights come from God, I’m a private citizen bro
I got nothin’ to hide but that ain’t the point, you know
Cos’ you swore to uphold that stuff written on a paper we call the Constitution
Say it ain’t so
It’s a new year but don’tcha know
Nothin’s changed here
Life’s still the same for the blacks, whites, reds and browns and the truthers, yo
